notes can be added to any item of content by whoever is looking at that content. This means that feedback on products, draft documents etc. can be made within the context of the item being presented on the site. 

notes can be threaded so that responses can be made to notes already posted and the threads can be reviewed.

notes is particularly useful in an Intranet or Extranet environment where it is useful for comments to be visible by all authorised users.
